Extreme 3D 2.0

Macromedia is preparing Extreme 3D, the successor to MacroModel. It should be shipping by the time you read this. Extreme 3D is a polygonal surface modeler that uses spline-based modeling and familiar 2D drawing tools to create its models (see screen 4). Although it's billed as CAD-accurate to 15 decimal places, the strength of Extreme 3D is really in organic modeling. The accuracy and drawing tools in Extreme 3D are serious competition for the other programs in this mini-roundup, but the program's interface in the Beta 3 version I reviewed seriously hampers it. An important consideration Macromedia developers had when designing Extreme 3D was its compatibility with the Macintosh version and Macromedia's other products. Thus, the product is a good choice for anyone who uses Director or Freehand or works in a mixed-platform environment. It uses an old Macintosh interface that has trouble adapting to the 1024 x 768 or higher-resolution displays most designers use for their graphics. Dialogs and the status bars use a painfully small proprietary screen font, and important commands are buried beneath several menus. These commands are available via hot keys, but some of the key combinations, such as Ctrl+Z for undo, come from the Mac background and not from Windows. The developers are aware of these problems and promised to try and address some of them in time for the final release. A single window can support multiple render styles for different objects. This means that once you've set the textures for an object, you can switch it to display as a bounding-box or a wire-frame for improved display speed while you work on other objects in shaded mode. The animation tools are easy to use and allow you to have independent control over any object, light, camera, or material property. Users can edit all the paths and objects in their animations. For example, paths can be edited as splines. The program also supports time-based and frame-based animation, as well as cross-platform distributed rendering. This means that an animation can be rendered across multiple machines in a network, including the Mac and Windows. Extreme 3D uses the same "score" as Macromedia Director to control the time and frame aspects of an animation and will produce high-resolution images, up to 8000 x 8000, for output to print. If developers bring the interface up to the usability level of CorelDream (see the sidebar "3D by Corel" on page 87) and TriSpectives, Extreme 3D will be a strong competitor. For instance, CorelDream and TriSpectives allow users to click on an object and bring up an editable properties dialog where users can scale, move, rotate, stretch, and otherwise modify the object. Extreme 3D allows some of this in a properties box you can access with a hot key, but the other two programs offer more control. All three programs offer tree-structured hierarchical views of the objects, lights, and cameras in a project, but CorelDream and TriSpectives let you edit the objects directly from the tree.

Fantavision

Fantavision was an animation program written for the Apple II personal computer series in 1985. It was subsequently ported to other platforms such as the Commodore Amiga (198?), Apple IIGS (1987) and the IBM PC (1988). It allowed the user to create short vector graphics animations frame-by-frame using a mouse, keyboard, or other device. The software would then use a primitive morphing technology to generate frames in-between the user-created frames, allowing complex animations to be created without the requirement that every frame be drawn by the user. Because this was done in real-time, it allowed for creative exploration and quick changes.

Fauve Matisse 1.2.5

Fauve Matisse v1.2.5 for Windows - Fauve Software January 15, 1994 Price: $149.00 Serials: Fauve Matisse v1.2x for Windows : 1733762 Fauve matisse v1.24 for Windows : 1733920 Fauve matisse v1.25 for Windows : 1733999 Fauve Matisse v1.27 for Windows : 1733767 or s/n: 1733920 System requirements: DOS 3.1 or higher, Windows 3.1 and higher. 386 or higher (coprocessor recommended), 4Mb RAM 4Mb hard disk space NOTE: The minimum serious system is a 486DX with 16Mb RAM. Fauve Software was founded in 1992 by brothers Fred and Richard Krueger. It developed Matisse, a natural medium paint program, and XRes, a high-end image- manipulation program that was the basis for Macromedia Fireworks. It was acquired by Macromedia in 1995. "Fauve Matisse was an extremely slick and powerful natural media paint and image manipulation program. It sold for a fraction of the price of the market leader Fractal Design Painter, and had a number of more powerful features like floating layers in its early versions. Matisse (and Fauve Software) died when the two brothers who owned it bet the farm on a high-end image-manipulation program called X-res - and lost. Ironically, X-res (and Matisse)was acquired by Macromedia.,While X-res continued to be published by Macromedia, Matisse was allowed to slip into a quiet grave." (NOTE: And Macromedia was in turn bought out by Adobe). Prior to Adobe Photoshop 3.0, this paint program was the only software that supported multiple free-floating layers of images. - AppleSeed 2017 -

FMSynth (FM Midi Synth) 2.14

This freeware is a rare jewel, cause this driver allows to do FM with a MIDI sequencer without the need of tracker, or rather to make MIDI with sounds of .IBK bank files..., and the true hardware is not required ..., we just need Dosbox and a real install on disk image of the DOS and win3.1... From readme : "The FM MIDI Synth driver is a replacement driver for sound cards that implement FM synthesis. It features an extensive MIDI implementation as well as support for loadable instrument banks and a Control Panel applet for run-time configuration of driver parameters. It is designed to work with as many different sound cards from various manufacturers as possible." (Copyright (c) 1993-1995 by Jamie O'Connell)
