Mathamatica 2.2 is a Windows 3.1 software, which means it is 16 Bit. If you are using a 64 Bit version of Windows XP, Vista, or 7, then cannot run 16 bit software. Microsoft decided not to support 16 Bit software on their 64 bit operating systems, so the 64 Bit versions of Windows will not run Windows 3.1 or DOS 16 bit software. You must use a virtual machine to run a version of Windows which can run Windows 3.1 software, like DOSBOX 0.74 with Windows 3.1 running in it, or the free MS Virtual Machine 2007 64 Bit with Windows 3.1, 2000, or XP installed.

I just downloaded Mathematica 7.0 a week ago. It's about 110 times bigger than version 2.2! But I don't think it's much better than 2.2
It works very well with Windows 7!
